We have made a difference in the quality of education in our district by working together as a community and it is time to do it again. We need your help to put a citizen’s sponsored initiative on the ballot for the November 2011 election that will give Colorado voters a chance to stop the deep cuts to state education funding year after year. These cuts have a significant impact on our local schools.
We have listed several ways that you can take action on our action page, but our number one priority before June 4th is to collect at least 10,000 signatures from across the district.
Repeated state cuts to education funding over the last three years have been enormous.
- Education funding cuts from 2009-11 totaled $350 million.
- Next year we are facing an additional $227 million in cuts. (As a result, SVVSD staff has been cut at the MS and HS level for next year.)
- Projected K-12 education budget cuts for the 2012-13 school year are another $300 million.
- In only four years we will have cuts of nearly $1 billion in education funding, all while our population is growing and enrollment is increasing.
As an education system, we cannot absorb those kinds of hits – without some hurt and long term impacts. Our legislators have been unable to stop the trend. But as citizens, we can do something… Help Grassroots St Vrain participate in stopping the bleeding.
By citizen petition, we can put a proposition on the November ballot that will adjust Colorado tax rates back to 1999 levels for five years. The projected revenue of $536.1 million annually will largely go toward public education from preschool through twelfth grade and public postsecondary education. As a group, we are committed to collecting 10,000 of the 130,000+ signatures necessary for this measure to appear on the ballot in November. We are on our way, but YOUR participation is critical in order for this option to be present on the Colorado ballot in November.
Thank you for taking these important steps and working together with other community members to make sure our future is in our own hands.
