Staring at the loss of 85 teaching positions across St Vrain Schools (SVVSD), a network of over 1,000 volunteers rallied together in 2008 to campaign for and help pass the first Mill Levy Overide (MLO) in the history of SVVSD. In the following four years State cuts to education funding more than eliminated those gains returning our District to the same difficult set of decisions to make.
Four years later, there is a stark difference: Grassroots St Vrain has evolved from a single campaign focused on the crisis at hand, to a large, well informed, coalition able to make a difference within our District, across Districts, and at a State level where real reform must be won.
Over 50% of the State of Colorado budget goes to education. Effectively, the primary responsibility of our State government is Education. So the question is simple: How do you create enough knowledge around how Education works at a local and state level in order to make a real, fact-based, impact on how we educate in the State of Colorado?
Though born of the funding crisis in 2008, Grassroots St. Vrain has evolved into a Statewide example of how to mobilize an informed community capable of making a real difference. We have evolved from an informal group with a self appointed leadership team to a formal organization with articles of incorporation, a defined mission, and a leadership team that has all graduated from Leadership St Vrain.
Grassroots St. Vrain is, in short, a coalition of the informed, a legitimate organization respected not only in our District but as a model other Districts seek to emulate.
Our mission: to raise awareness about Education, encouraging St. Vrain communities to make informed decisions and inspiring community members to create a cumulative impact on the future of our schools.
True strength, the ability to be influential with key decision makers, comes from dealing in fact with enough voices to spread out and be heard. We welcome you to join our coalition of the informed. Whether you agree or disagree, we simply want our community to deal in facts.
