The Colorado School Public Relations Association (COSPRA) had its annual conference in November and GSV leaders participated in important discussions around effective communication. COSPRA advocates for effective public relations practices that support student achievement and works to create an atmosphere of mutual trust and understanding by leading, serving, and engaging the public in support of Colorado public education. We were invited by John Poynton, SVVSD Communications Director, and COSPRA chair.
The conference featured frank, unfiltered advice on media strategy to practical tips on crisis management, community leadership, storytelling, social media, board communications and on-camera interviewing tips. Comprised of board members, communications directors, superintendents and other education leaders, the dialogue at this event centered around becoming more effective communicators by collaborating, sharing resources and strengthening our skills in strategic communications, marketing and public participation among other topics.
GSV was reminded of the important role schools play in our communities. Leaders engaging in professional development is essential to view educators as credible sources of advice on school-community relations. This illustrated the important tenant of public schools and communication; Civic conversations prompt the public to be better informed and involved in support of public education.
