With help from thousands of grassroots supporters, St. Vrain municipalities, local businesses, community groups and stakeholders, our district recently passed a mill levy override that will partially back fill the $20M in education funding cuts made by the state over the last three years and keep our schools on the positive track of improving student performance and providing quality education for our students and our future.
Twenty seven other school districts in the state felt the same way – and approved 35 local mill levies, bond issues or sales taxes to support their schools where the state did not.
TBD Colorado is a nonpartisan, collaborative effort designed to create informed and constructive conversations among Coloradans about some of the biggest issues facing the state – education being on the list. The program was initiated by the TBD Colorado Board of Directors, Governor Hickenlooper and a group of nonpartisan advisors. Grassroots St. Vrain Board members were honored to be part of these conversations.
On November 14th, the TBD Colorado Board of Directors released policy recommendations that were based on the regional and summit conversations that were held among Colorado citizens last April through June. These recommendations were recently presented to the Governor and the TBD Colorado Advisory Group. A final report will be published on December 3rd.
The goal of GSV is to provide you with information that will raise awareness about education in St. Vrain. Please take a moment to review the policy recommendations that are being considered by our legislature. The impact to our schools, as well as other critical services provided by our state, is potentially significant.
We would welcome any comments from you about the recommendations and will forward them on to our partners who will be involved in a TBD panel next week.
