In November GSV Board members were invited to present at the Colorado Association of School Boards (CASB) annual convention in Colorado Springs. We were invited by John Poynton, SVVSD Communications Director, to be part of a panel discussion about public participation. GSV was also asked by G.K. Baum, a conference sponsor, to present how the development of strong local advocacy has contributed to education successes in St. Vrain.
After discussing the positive outcomes of SVVSD’s innovative Leadership St. Vrain program, in which our District leaders meet with community members and parents to share ideas and learn about the business of running a school district, we shared the experience of Grassroots St. Vrain and how we have evolved from school-based parents into an independent education advocacy non-profit. The board members attending the sessions on public participation and ‘Taking Community Outreach to the Next Level’ were impressed with the dialogue, knowledge base and community activism in our area and asked many questions about how to create the same level of engagement in their own districts. GSV plans to continue the conversation about developing organized, grassroots parent involvement with several interested school districts in Colorado.
