GSV was invited to speak at the Student Advisory Council winter meetings to discuss our 3A mill levy involvement with student leaders from Frederick, Erie, Longmont, Lyons, Mead, Niwot, Olde Columbine, Silver Creek and Skyline high schools. Our goal was to provide a community leadership model for students and demonstrate that advocacy can start small, but impact big.
GSV also shared with Student Advisory Council an opportunity to participate in the 2013: Year of the Student project. The group voted to add their organization to the list of people and organizations throughout Colorado who have signed onto Year of the Student to show support for state-level education funding improvements that keep Colorado nationally competitive and correlate with reform developments, mandates and accountability measures already implemented in Colorado.
On January 30, 2013, Student Advisory Council helped deliver Year of the Student signature packets to our state legislators at the Capitol. Students personally spoke with legislators representing the St. Vrain Valley school district about their school experience and the importance of education funding. We appreciate their time, enthusiasm, leadership and commitment to help raise awareness with our legislators that student success and education funding should be a priority.
