2013: Year of the Student

What is the 2013: Year of the Student Project?

• Focus Colorado’s attention on the devastating impact that education cuts are having on Colorado’s students – preschool through higher education.
• Create a sense of urgency around the need to match Colorado’s education reforms, policies, and pilot programs with the resources necessary to ensure that all students succeed.
• Galvanize thousands of public education supporters and hundreds of organizations to demand meaningful legislative action toward adequate funding of schools, colleges and universities in 2013.

Grassroots St Vrain collected signatures, spoke to school groups and attended planning meetings to assist with this endeavor throughout 2012. On January 9th the SVVSD School Board passed a resolution in support of the 2013 Year of the Student Project.

On January 30th, 2013, SVVSD was well represented at the Capitol.  GSV Leadership, the SVVSD Student Advisory Council, Silver Creek High School Leadership Academy, Asst Superintendent Mark Mills & Board of Education member, Debbie Lammers were among the  hundreds of other involved and concerned citizens from all over Colorado that personally hand delivered each pack of 9,000+ signatures to every State Representative and Senator. We were able to send the message to our legislators that Public Education is very important and that they need to make it a priority during this Legislative Session.  I think having so many of our SVVSD students there sent an important message to the Legislature as well!
