GSV Engages Our State Legislators

Embracing our power as citizens, GSV leaders attended sessions in both the House of Representatives and Senate at the Colorado State Capitol last Wednesday. We were able to connect with all eight lawmakers that represent the SVVSD to learn more about current legislation under debate in regard to public school funding for budget year 2014-15.

Our experience at the Capitol was both frustrating and empowering.

Frustrating, because it is difficult to understand the nuances of the legislative process here in Colorado. We heard Legislators from both sides of the aisle making statements that did not always square with the facts as we understand them. Then, in the next sentence, they would share a keen insight. Reconciling fact vs. fiction is now our challenge.

Empowering, because we were able to speak face-to-face with all of our representatives. They all dedicated time to engage with us in constructive conversations about school finance. We walked away knowing that concerned community members and constituents seeking dialogue have the opportunity to discuss important issues with those that represent them.

We returned on Monday to a standing room only House Education Committee hearing on House Bill 14-1292, the Student Success Act. Testimony in support of and against the Student Success Act was heard for over six hours from various educators, students and community members across Colorado. The Legislators now have a big job to consider testimony given and decide if the bill will remain as is or be amended before going up for votes.

What is certain is that the goings on in our State Capitol deserve our attention. One way or another, legislative actions will impact the student experience in the SVVSD.

GSV will continue to learn and share more about current developments at the Capitol that affect our schools. Share in our experience by joining us on Facebook and Twitter.
