Every year, the SVVSD Administration hosts a meeting for all state senators and representatives who serve the district and this year Grassroots St. Vrain was invited to participate. Facilitated by SVVSD Executive Director of PTECH and Governmental Affairs Brandon Shaffer, the dinner on January 25, 2016, was attended by Speaker of the House, Dickie Lee Hullinghorst, Senators Rollie Heath and Matt Jones, and Representatives Mike Foote, Lori Saine and Jonathan Singer, as well as Colorado Dept. of Education Board Representative Angelika Schroeder and many SVVSD administrators.
After SVVSD Superintendent Don Haddad welcomed the group and introductions were made, the legislators took turns speaking to the attendees about what they see as the top issues impacting education as well as their agendas and priorities for this year’s legislative session. Topics included the state budget, the Mental Health / School Safety Bill (HB 16-1063), data privacy legislation, medical marijuana and the K-12 setting, and testing and assessments.
Of particular interest to GSV were the conversations about the state budget and a potential initiative addressing TABOR limits that might appear on this year’s November ballot. More information can be found on both of these topics in our “State Budget to Dominate 2016 Legislative Session” post.
GSV will continue to track this legislative session and share information with the SVVSD community so that voters can make informed decisions in November. Stay tuned!
