Voting. It’s the way we, as citizens, have a voice in how our country, state, city, and even our schools are run. With all of the attention and press surrounding the presidential candidates, it is hard to focus on the smaller, but no less important state and local issues. We encourage you to vote all the way down your ballot.
Although there is no statewide measure specific to school funding on the ballot this year….there is an amendment that directly impacts any future funding measure in Colorado. Amendment 71, or “Raise the Bar” as its proponents call it, would require 55% of voters to approve a proposed amendment to the state constitution, instead of the 50% plus one needed now. Many in Colorado agree it is too easy to change our state’s constitution and Amendment 71 was designed to make it more difficult.
However Amendment 71 also requires signatures from 2% of registered voters in each of Colorado’s 35 state Senate districts in order to place an initiative on the ballot. This means a single district could block a measure the rest of the state supports. Even if a measure was supported statewide, the cost to gather signatures would be significant, and would reduce the likelihood that a citizen backed effort could be initiated.
We do not believe this is the solution to protect our constitution from conflicting amendments. Amendment 71 would deprive Coloradans from working to change outdated amendments that negatively impact funding for state services such as education, healthcare and public safety. For this reason, Grassroots St. Vrain cannot support Amendment 71.
SVVSD Measure 3A Honk & Waves
And on to the bottom of our ballots….local bond measure 3A. To remind the 70% of voters who do not currently have children in school about the bond measure, GSV is organizing two honk & wave dates. Please join other members of your school on your designated corner! The date, time and location for your school is posted on our website.. And please do bring the kids! What a great way to show them how to engage in a cause that impacts them…plus they can wear their Halloween costumes for extra smiles and waves. It only takes an hour of your time but the impact could be enormous.
